Big Chop and Braids!

Greetings, everyone! I wanted to share a short video of a big chop I did earlier this week!

I had a client with natural hair that had been wearing sew-ins and for a while and had damaged parts of her hair from using flat irons. She wanted all the damage gone and the rest of her hair cut to an even length. We followed that with feed-in braids to give her a low maintenance style while growing re-growing her hair.

I used shears to cut her hair and used Hair Garden’s Mint cleanser and Mango Punch Conditioner. We are looking forward to returning her to a full, healthy head of hair!

Please post any questions or comments and thanks for visiting my blog!

Watch “Company Feature – Hair Garden” on YouTube!

Hello, lovelies! Back in early spring, I had the honor of being interviewed by the one of the owners of Paris Hair and Beauty Supplies! They came down to participate in the Taliah Waajid Natural Hair and Beauty Expo, which I was teaching classes at so I got the chance to meet and sit down with them!

It was a very exciting experience! We discussed my company and my products in this interview. It has been broken up into different topics which I will be posting!

Company feature:

Dusting Ends! (Revisited)

Greetings, my dears! Back in May 2010 (😰), I did my original post about dusting my ends (link). I had always been urged to do a video but just could never get it together!! Well, SURPRISE!! I finally did a quick, last-minute video of me dusting my ends.

Just as a refresher, dusting is like trimming your ends but not taking as much off. I personally have 4 classifications for cutting when it comes to my hair!

1. Spot cutting- That’s cutting a knot out here and there or where you see a problem area.

2. Dusting- Cutting about an inch or less of your ends to reduce tangles and shedding.

3. Trim- removing and inch or more of your ends. You are not cutting to achieve a style, just to remove the dead ends. (This can be done to refresh a cut!)

4. Hair cut- This is cutting to remove bulk and/or to achieve a particular look or style.

Moving back to dusting, I have a short little video showing how I usually dust. I also have it uploaded on my YouTube channel so if you don’t already follow me (The Hair Garden), please do!😊

I hope you found the video helpful! I am excited to finally share more of my natural hair regimen with you all! I can’t wait to post the next video! Thanks for stopping by!

Satin Pillows and Bonnets for Hair Protection!

*Disclaimer: I am not advising towards or advocating anyone to stop wrapping up their hair at night. This is merely an account of a carefree natural!

Greetings, my lovely people! It has been a while since I dropped in, as usual, but I do have quite a bit of updating to do along the next couple of days! I have added some brand new items to the Hair Garden Nursery and I have also revisited and restocked some items from the past!!

The first set of Hair Garden’s hair care items I want to share are the new sleep care accessories! I decided to break in my sewing machine and have created lovely satin-lined pillows and bonnets to protect your hair while you rest!

Personally, I DO NOT wrap my hair at night unless it is completely necessary. In the past, I couldn’t sleep well unless my hair was secured. However, time passed and I would occasionally go to sleep without securing my hair, especially in the warmer months! There would be some nights where I would awaken suddenly from discomfort only to find that my scarf was soaked with sweat therefore causing my hair to be damp with sweat. That defeated the purpose of protecting my hair style overnight, right?

After a few of those occurrences, I stopped wrapping my hair at night and I loved it!!! It has been about 7 years since I last tied my hair on a regular basis. With the assistance of satin pillowcases, I was able to pull off avoiding that nightly routine. Occasionally, I would wear a bonnet or wrap if the hair style absolutely called for it.

Now, we all know that I love my African fabric! I acquired some lovely material when I visited Ghana last year to make my own pillows, headwraps and other crafts but had a time getting to know my sewing machine! After a break and determination I got that machine running and started my pillows and bonnets! I started small and moved up in size.

I picked the finest, high-quality satin I could find to go with the African fabric and the rest speaks for itself!

I am proud to add these lovely additions to The Hair Garden Nursery’s line-up in my Etsy shop! I offer pillowcases ranging from $15-35, full pillows range from $25-50. All offer free shipping for a limited time!

Hello, my lovely people! Oh, how I have missed you all! I have been on a hiatus but am now back to work! I filmed my 1st commercial ad specifically for Paris Hair and Beauty Supplies, the beauty supply store that carries my products! I was pretty proud of the outcome so I wanted to share it with you all!

I introduce 2 of my new products as well- Mango Punch Cleanser and Euca-Mint Conditioner! I will be making another one soon because I have some other hair treats I am working on!

I hope you liked it! I will be updating again pretty soon!

Aphropuphs at Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair Show!!

Hello, beautiful people! This past spring I reached one of my ultimate career goals! I will given the opportunity to teach 2 classes at the Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair and Beauty Show. To be part of this event was definitely an honor! For many years I have attended this show and met many wonderful people. Never did I think I would have an opportunity to be part of the show so soon!

The 2 classes I did that weekend were: 1. Heatless Stretching and Styling and 2. Slow Growth Troubleshooting.

In the first class I did, Heatless Stretching and Styling, I had the beautiful Michele Etienne as my hair model. She has been a natural hair client of mine for quite some time and she was gracious enough to travel all the way from Augusta to let me use her hair for my hands-on demonstration. The turnout was really good and I got a lot of questions from the audience. I demonstrated everything from banding, braiding with fabric, roller/rod setting to hand stretching during blow drying. I have done articles on this very blog about many of these heatless stretching methods and will do more later. I showed that these things can be done with the tightest curl pattern and with all types of products from your favorite over-the-counter product to natural oils and butters.

In the second class, Slow Growth Troubleshooting, we went over the many internal and external factors that can affect hair growth. We covered everything from daily styling and product usage to environmental and internal factors. This class had an even better turn out than the first. I answered a lot of questions from ladies concerned about their hair and scalp health.

The hair show was a very exciting and humbling experience for me. I was honored to be a part of the line-up of natural hair gurus and experts giving classes and demos that weekend. I hope to be able to take part in this wonderful event again in the future! I wish  I would have posted the information about the classes sooner so I could invite more of you but I will be better prepared in the future!

Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
